About the Practice

Ranchi, Jharkhand

Architecture With Purpose.
Spaces With Identity.

SANTOSH SHEKHAR Architects is a Ranchi, Jharkhand architecture and planning practice led by Ar. SANTOSH SHEKHAR, bringing nearly two decades of professional experience to projects across India.

We believe meaningful architecture begins not with a predetermined style, but with an understanding of place, people and purpose.

We Don’t Begin With Style.
We Begin With Purpose.

Every project begins with a fundamental question:

What is the right design for this place, these people and this purpose?

For us, architecture is not the pursuit of form for its own sake. It is the thoughtful orchestration of space, function, proportion, light, material, climate, movement and human experience.

Each site presents its own constraints, opportunities and aspirations. Our responsibility is to understand them carefully and transform them into architecture that feels coherent, purposeful and enduring.

We therefore resist the idea that meaningful architecture can be reduced to a predetermined visual style. The strongest solutions emerge naturally from context, purpose and rigorous design thinking.

Nearly Two Decades of Experience

Led by Ar. SANTOSH SHEKHAR, the practice draws upon approximately two decades of professional architectural experience.

That experience brings more than familiarity with design. It brings an understanding of how ideas evolve through planning, technical coordination, construction realities, client aspirations and the life of a building after completion.

Our approach combines creative exploration with professional discipline: architecture must inspire, but it must also function, endure and be capable of being built well.

Rooted in Ranchi.
Designed With a Wider Perspective.

Ranchi and the wider landscape of Jharkhand possess their own climatic conditions, evolving urban character, cultural memory, material traditions and patterns of everyday life.

Architecture becomes more meaningful when it responds to this context rather than imposing itself upon it.

Our work considers site, orientation, climate, circulation, scale, surrounding development and the experience of the people who will ultimately inhabit the space.

At the same time, we remain engaged with contemporary architectural thinking, technology and changing expectations of comfort, performance and aesthetics.

The aim is neither to imitate the past nor to follow fashion for its own sake. It is to create architecture that feels of its time while remaining capable of outlasting it. From this Ranchi studio, the practice undertakes architecture and planning work across India.

Design Is Not Decoration.
It Is Decision-Making.

Behind every apparently simple building lies a sequence of important decisions.

  1. Where should the entrance occur?
  2. How should people move naturally through the building?
  3. Where should daylight enter?
  4. Which spaces require openness, and which require privacy?
  5. How should architecture, structure and building services work together?
  6. How should the building respond to heat, rain and changing patterns of use?
  7. How will materials age?
  8. How can the building remain practical to operate and maintain?

At SANTOSH SHEKHAR Architects, design is a process of observation, enquiry, refinement and resolution.

A successful project is not defined only by how it photographs when completed. It is defined by how naturally it works for the people who use it every day.

Our Approach

  1. Context Before Fashion

Every site has its own logic. We study it before drawing conclusions.

  2. Function With Character

Practicality and beauty are not opposing objectives. Strong architecture achieves both.

  3. Simplicity With Depth

Good design does not require unnecessary complexity to appear important. Clarity, proportion and restraint can create some of the most memorable spaces.

  4. Collaboration Over Assumption

A project becomes stronger when we understand not merely what a client asks for, but why it matters to them.

  5. Detail With Purpose

From planning decisions to material junctions, details determine how architecture is ultimately experienced.

  6. Designed for the Long Term

Buildings live longer than design trends. We value durability, adaptability and timelessness over temporary visual fashion.

Beyond Drawings

An architect’s responsibility extends far beyond producing plans and elevations.

Architecture requires the ability to connect vision with feasibility.

It means reconciling aspirations with site conditions, design intent with technical requirements, aesthetics with usability, and imagination with the realities of construction.

Our role is to bring clarity to that complexity — transforming an idea into a coherent architectural direction and ultimately into a built environment with meaning.

We seek consistency between the largest planning decision and the smallest meaningful detail.

Spaces Should Be Designed Around Life.

Architecture becomes meaningful only when people begin to inhabit it.

A residence becomes the setting for a family’s memories. A workplace influences how people interact and perform. A commercial space becomes part of the experience of a brand. An institutional environment can shape learning, community and identity. A civic space can influence how people understand the institution it represents.

Therefore, we do not begin by asking: “What should this building look like?”

What should happen here, how should it feel, and how can architecture make that experience better?

The appearance of a building should emerge from deeper thinking rather than become the starting point of the design process.

Ar. SANTOSH SHEKHAR

Principal Architect

Ar. SANTOSH SHEKHAR brings to the practice a design philosophy grounded in both creative imagination and professional responsibility.

His approach recognises that an architectural idea must ultimately survive the discipline of planning, engineering, construction, material behaviour, maintenance and everyday human use.

A concept must inspire — but it must also work. A building may have presence — but it must remain appropriate to its context. A detail may be visually refined — but it must also be buildable.

This balance between idea and execution, expression and discipline, ambition and responsibility forms an important foundation of the practice.

Every Project Begins With Listening.

Clients rarely arrive with only a requirement for rooms and square footage. They arrive with ambitions.

A family may be creating a home that represents years of aspiration. An entrepreneur may be developing a space intended to support the next chapter of a business. A developer must balance architectural quality with usability, feasibility and long-term value. An institution may need a building capable of representing its purpose for decades.

Understanding that deeper objective changes the design process.

  • So before architecture becomes drawings, we listen.
  • Before proposing, we question.
  • Before finalising, we refine.

Because the quality of the final space often depends upon the quality of the questions asked at the beginning.

Creating Value Through Architecture

We do not measure architectural value only by visual impact.

  • A valuable building uses its site intelligently.
  • It organises movement clearly.
  • It makes considered use of natural light and ventilation.
  • It creates appropriate relationships between spaces.
  • It responds to climate and surroundings.
  • It considers construction, operation and maintenance.
  • Most importantly, it supports the purpose for which it was created.

Thoughtful architecture is not simply an expense attached to construction. It is a way of increasing the intelligence, usability, identity and long-term value of what is being built.

Our Commitment

  • Clarity of Thought
  • Integrity of Design
  • Sensitivity to Context
  • Attention to Detail
  • Technical Responsibility
  • Respect for the Client’s Aspirations

We believe the strongest architecture does not need to shout for attention. It earns attention through proportion, experience, relevance and permanence.

Start a Conversation

Let Us Create Something Worth Building.

Every meaningful project begins before the first line is drawn. It begins with a conversation about place, possibility and purpose.

If you are planning a new project and are looking for an architectural practice that will approach it not merely as a building to be produced, but as a problem to be understood and an opportunity to be shaped thoughtfully, we would be pleased to begin that conversation.
